How Small Problems Lead to Big Wins

Development of a Client Partnership

In the world of industrial engineering and construction, it’s easy to focus on the big projects—the multimillion-dollar builds, the complex systems, the highly visible deliverables. These projects are exciting, challenging, and often career-defining. But at ITAC, we’ve learned something just as important: meaningful client relationships often begin with small problems.

These small problems may not make headlines. They might be a single drawing, a short site visit, or a limited scope engagement. Yet when approached with care, expertise, and a genuine desire to help, they can become the first chapter in a much larger story—one built on trust, momentum, and shared success.

A Simple Start

We recently began working with a new customer who was transforming the waste sorting industry through advanced technology. Like many new client relationships, ours didn’t begin with a massive project or a long-term contract. It began with something simple.

This company had recently acquired a new property and needed documentation of the existing electrical system. The request was straightforward: create a single-line diagram that clearly represented the electrical infrastructure of the facility.

This wasn’t a flashy project. There were no grand designs or sweeping transformations involved. But it was important. Accurate electrical documentation is foundational—it supports safety, future upgrades, compliance, and operational confidence. Our team approached the task with the same attention to detail and professionalism we bring to our largest projects.

We delivered a clear, well-organized single-line diagram that met the client’s needs and helped them better understand their new facility. The result? The client was extremely pleased with the quality of our work.

That satisfaction became the turning point.

From Documentation to Design

Because the first project went well, our client came back to us with a second request. This time, the scope expanded beyond documentation and into design and visualization.

Their company is developing a new operations center designed to showcase their advanced waste sorting equipment. As part of this effort, they needed a walkway and viewing platform that would allow visitors to safely observe their operations. Safety, accessibility, and presentation were all critical factors.

The ITAC Fall Protection Group was engaged to build the platform, and ITAC’s role was to support the design process. To do that effectively, our Fall Protection technician performed a 3D scan of the space. This scan allowed us to develop an accurate design and visually demonstrate to the customer exactly what we were building, before construction even began.

This step may seem small, but it had a big impact. The 3D scan and resulting design gave the client clarity and confidence. They could see how the finished platform would integrate into their facility, how safety considerations were being addressed, and how the space would function as a showcase for their technology.

Once again, the customer was very pleased with our progress.

Momentum Builds

At this point, something important happened. The relationship shifted.

What started as a single documentation request had grown into an active design and construction support project.   More importantly, trust had been established. Our customer had seen how we handled the details, how we communicated, and how we supported their goals, not just our scope of work. We had successfully turned this client into a Raving Fan!

As a result, we now have three additional project requests from this client. One of these has the potential to become a multi-million dollar effort, tied to the revamp of an old trash sorting facility. This work is part of a long-term, decades long project focused on modernizing waste sorting operations.

That’s a remarkable progression—from a single-line diagram to a potential decades-long partnership. And it all started with a small problem.

Why Small Problems Matter

This story highlights a core belief at ITAC: small problems are opportunities.

When clients bring us small challenges, they’re not just asking for a deliverable. They’re evaluating how we think, how we communicate, and how seriously we take their needs. They’re asking, “Can I trust you?”

By solving small problems well, we demonstrate:

  • Competence – We know our craft and apply best practices at every scale.
  • Care – We treat each project as important, regardless of size.
  • Reliability – We do what we say we’ll do, when we say we’ll do it.
  • Partnership – We look beyond the immediate task to understand the client’s bigger picture.

These qualities don’t require a massive budget or a complex scope. They require intention.

The ITAC Approach

At ITAC, we don’t measure success solely by project size. We measure it by the strength of our relationships and the impact of our work over time. Whether we’re documenting an electrical system, performing a 3D scan, or supporting a long-term infrastructure transformation, our approach remains the same:

  • Listen carefully
  • Solve the problem in front of us
  • Anticipate what might come next
  • Help our clients succeed

The story with this particular client is still being written, but its opening chapters reinforce a truth we see again and again: when you help clients with small problems, big things can happen.
