Emergency Backup Power System
During the planning and scoping phase of this project, we served as the owner’s engineer, performing technical evaluations of four sites and developing an appropriation estimate, scope and conceptual design.
Later, ITAC was selected to provide a turnkey 9 MW, 5KV automated backup power system for an investor-owned utility company’s 783 MW combustion turbine power generation facility located in Caroline County, Virginia. Our team of professional engineers provided all engineering disciplines necessary to install three 3 MW Caterpillar C175 diesel generators in sound-attenuated enclosures, custom Arc Resistant 5KV generator paralleling switchgear, a permanent fuel unloading station, and physical security systems for all new infrastructure. ITAC Construction self-performed all electrical and mechanical installation services and provided construction management services.
ITAC Power Systems custom designed and built the generator paralleling switchgear system in our 30,000 square foot fabrication facility in Chester, Virginia. We were also responsible for integrating the new emergency diesel generator system with the plant’s existing complex controls to provide for a completely automated power restoration capability upon loss of offsite power. Lastly, ITAC Power Systems tested and commissioned the power system components and placed them into service during a planned facility outage in the Spring of 2016.
This complex design build project was completed on time and exceeded all the client’s requirements. Specialized in integrating our own medium voltage paralleling switchgear, we provided the client a fully integrated, customized solution which drastically reduced their cost and schedule. Our fast track approach also minimized our client’s risk by allowing them to wait until they had secured the necessary air permit before giving us final authorization to start buying equipment and fabricating gear.
